At Rosyth Estate House, sustainability isn’t a destination—it’s a journey we take every day, guided by our values, our environment, and our people. As we renew our Travelife Gold accreditation, we’re using the opportunity to reflect, reassess, and reinvigorate our commitment to both the planet and our local community.

Good Doesn’t Travel Far

We believe that doing good begins close to home. That’s why we’re proud to grow much of what we use on the estate itself, and when we don’t, we source locally whenever possible. From the vegetables in our kitchen garden to the production of our own fertilisers, we favour local, seasonal, and sustainable. It supports our community and keeps our footprint small.

Engaging with Our Community

Sustainability is also about people. Our connection to the village school just down the road is one of the most meaningful aspects of our work. Whether it’s helping with breakfast for the children that we provide three times a week or inviting students to learn about nature and conservation on the estate, we’re constantly finding ways to give back.

Our Artisan Tea Factory is more than just a place of production—it’s a social enterprise. We employ local women and offer training in artisanal techniques, empowering our community with skills and opportunities.

What Sustainability Means to Us

Everyone has their own idea of what sustainability looks like. For us, it means:

  • No single-use plastics – though we have a strict policy, we’re honest about the challenges. Supermarket products still arrive wrapped in plastic, and even the pola (local market) has seen an increase in plastic use. We’re working on solutions, like using reusable silicone sheets in the kitchen.
  • Composting and fertiliser production – our recent purchase of a mulcher is helping us convert garden waste into nutrient-rich fertiliser for our plants.
  • Coconut shell charcoal – we’ve partnered with a local supplier to repurpose coconut shells into natural charcoal briquettes.

The Hardest Part: Plastic Waste

Despite our efforts, plastic remains our biggest challenge, especially in a rural community where recycling infrastructure is limited. We’re constantly exploring ways to reduce, reuse, and repurpose. It’s not always perfect—but we believe in progress over perfection.

Looking Ahead

Our vision for sustainability at Rosyth is not just about being “green”; it’s about being thoughtful, local, and connected. With each initiative—small or large—we hope to make life better for our guests, our neighbours, and the generations to come.

We invite you to be part of this journey when you stay with us, learn with us, and grow with us.
